CLARKSVILLE, TN — The Iowa baseball team fell to Austin Peay at Raymond C. Hand Park, 10-4. The Governors scored four in the first inning and never looked back.
The Black and Gold (2-6) put one run on the board to start the first to take an early 1-0 lead. Kevin Hoef continued to swing the bat well and led Iowa off with a single up the middle, later stealing second. Two outs later, Wes Freie picked up an RBI with a single up the middle.
Austin Peay (4-6) came back strong in the bottom of the inning, scoring four runs on three hits for a 4-1 ballgame. The Governors added another run in the second to further their lead to 5-1.
The Hawkeyes battled back in the fourth, scoring three and make it 5-4. With two outs T.J. Cataldo singled up the middle to start things off. Mike McQuillan reached on an infield error, and both runners advanced on a passed ball. Tyson Blaser walked to load the bases, followed by a Trevor Willis RBI-walk. With the bases still loaded Hoef hit a two-RBI single up the middle.
The Governors matched Iowa in the bottom of the fourth, also scoring three and ultimately putting the game out of reach for the Hawkeyes 8-4. Austin Peay added two insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth for a 10-4 win.
In the loss, Hoef went 2-for-4 with a stolen base, two RBI and a walk. Freie went 2-for-4 with a double. Cataldo went 2-for-4 with a run scored. McQuillan went 1-for-3 picking up his first collegiate double.
Iowa will take on Austin Peay tomorrow; first pitch is set for 1 p.m. (CDT).
