PHOENIX, AZ – – The University of Iowa men’s tennis team defeated Northern Arizona Friday, 6-1. With the victory, the 52nd-ranked Hawkeyes move to 8-1 on the season.
“This was a good decisive win playing outdoors for the second time this season,” said Head Coach Steve Houghton. “Sunday against No. 19 Arizona will be a real test for us.”
Iowa swept all three doubles matches to claim the point. The Hawkeyes have now won the doubles point in all nine of their matches this season and hold a combined record of 24-3. At No. 1 doubles, the 31st-ranked duo of Christian Bierich and Nikita Zotov defeated David Flodberg and Jacob Tracy, 8-4. Tommy McGeorge and Will Vasos continued their stellar play at the No. 3 position. The duo defeated Chris Arena and Jaco Visagie, 8-3, to stay undefeated in dual match play. At No. 2 doubles, Reinoud Haal and Greg Holm defeated Andrew Reiff and Robin Pezzutto, 8-7.
Iowa kept the momentum going into singles play, winning five of six matches. Bierich defeated Reiff at the No. 1 position, 6-3, 6-0. At the No. 3 position, Haal defeated Pezzutto 6-3, 6-1. Vasos defeated Tracy at the No. 4 position, 6-2, 6-2. McGeorge and Holm also claimed singles victories. McGeorge defeated Brelin Powell 6-0, 6-1, at No. 5 singles and Holm defeated Visagie 6-4, 6-2, at No. 6 singles.
Iowa will conclude its spring trip Sunday at No. 19 Arizona at noon (CST). The Hawkeyes will not play Cal Poly Monday as originally scheduled.
