Stetson Defeats Iowa In Extra Innings

March 13, 2009

DELAND, FL – The University of Iowa softball team was defeated by Stetson, 6-5 in eight innings, Friday night at the Stetson Classic. The Hatters hit a two-run home run in the seventh to extend the game and plated the game-winning run in the bottom of the eighth.

Stetson grabbed an early 3-0 lead in the fifth, but Iowa fought back to take a 4-3 lead in the sixth frame.

Senior Colleen McGlaughlin singled and senior Sam Heinzman then reached on an error. Sophomore Chelsey Carmody hit a ground ball, but a throwing error by the Stetson third baseman allowed McGlaughlin to score. Junior Katie Brown followed with a double, scoring Heinzman. Freshman Missy Mazur got the go ahead runs to score by hitting a grounder to second, but a throwing error plated Brown and Carmody.

Iowa took a 5-3 lead in the top of the seventh. McGlaughlin reached on yet another error and moved to second on a passed ball. Heinzman singled to get McGlaughlin to third and she scored on an RBI single by Brown.

Stetson forced extra innings in its last at-bat when Andrea Migliori hit a two-run home run.

International tiebreakers were used in extra innings, but Iowa couldn’t plate its runner that was placed on second. Stetson took advantage when Jessica Lokeinsky singled to score pinch-runner Grace Turner.

Brown went a perfect 4-for-4 with two RBI for Iowa at the plate.

Senior Brittany Weil took the loss, throwing 7.1 innings. She allowed four earned runs on six hits with 10 strikeouts and three walks.

Iowa will take on Cornell Saturday at 12:30 p.m. in day two of the Stetson Classic.
