Box Score

DELAND, FL – The University of Iowa softball team overcame a three-run deficit to knock off Long Island, 6-3, Tuesday in the first game of the Stetson Hatter Roundup. Timely hitting by senior Colleen McGlaughlin and a solid relief performance by junior Amanda Zust led the Hawkeyes to victory.

Long Island jumped out to an early 3-0 lead after the first two innings, but Iowa stormed back with a five-run fifth inning to regain the lead. McGlaughlin delivered in a big way for the Hawkeyes, smacking a one-out grand slam for a 4-3 Iowa lead. The Morton, IL, native drove in senior Sam Heinzman and junior Taylor Leichsenring, who both singled, along with senior Erin Riemersma, who drew a walk. Sophomore Jenny Schuelke drove in Iowa’s fifth run of the frame with a fielder’s choice RBI, plating sophomore Chelsey Carmody.

Iowa added a late run in the top of the seventh for the final score. Carmody singled and moved to second on a Katie Brown sacrifice bunt. Carmody scored on an RBI single to left by Schuelke.

Zust entered the game in the third inning for Iowa and promptly shut down the Long Island attack. She tossed five innings and allowed only two hits and two walks while striking out four. She struck out the side in the third, setting the tone for the rest of the game. She also retired the side in order in the seventh to get her ninth win of the season.

Carmody and Leichsenring each had two hits for Iowa, while McGlaughlin added four RBI. Schuelke chipped in two RBI.

The Hawkeyes will look to avenge an earlier loss to Stetson at approximately 4 p.m. Tuesday.
