DELAND, FL – Junior Amanda Zust pitched a complete game, one-hit shutout to help Iowa knock off Stetson, 1-0, Tuesday in the final game of the Stetson Hatter Roundup. Iowa scored its lone run in the top of the first, and that’s all the help Zust would need. The victory also gave Head Coach Gayle Blevins her 900th win at Iowa.
Zust tied a season-high with 10 strikeouts and allowed only three batters to reach base. She sat down five of the first six batters in a row, with the second batter of the game reaching by walk. After the base on balls, Zust got the next five batters out before allowing the only hit of the game, a bunt single with two outs in the third. The Des Moines native then retired nine-straight batters before issuing the last walk. She finished the game by retiring the final four batters in order. Zust has now thrown six complete games and three shutouts on the season and stands at 11-1 overall.
Iowa plated its only run of the game off a Stetson error in the first. Senior Erin Riemersma started the game with a single and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by junior Taylor Leichsenring. Sophomore Chelsey Carmody then hit a ground ball back to the pitcher, but an errant throw to first allowed Carmody to reach safely and Riemersma to score.
Four Hawkeyes, Riemersma, Carmody, junior Katie Brown and freshman Liz Watkins, each had a hit in the contest.
Iowa travels to Daytona Beach, FL, Wednesday to take on Bethune-Cookman. First pitch is scheduled for 2:30 p.m.
