ORLANDO, FL – The University of Iowa softball team defeated Central Florida, 2-1 in an 11-inning marathon game Thursday afternoon. The Hawkeyes are now 24-5 on the season.
Iowa took an early 1-0 lead in the top of the second frame. Sophomore Chelsey Carmody tripled to start the inning and scored on a squeeze bunt by junior Katie Brown.
Central Florida’s Tiffany Lane knotted the score at one run each in the bottom of the third with her fourth home run of the season.
Neither team could find its offense after the third, so the game went to extra innings.
The Hawkeyes had a prime scoring chance in the top of the 10th, but couldn’t get the run across. Brown hit a leadoff double and was replaced at second by senior Callie Adreon. After freshman Liz Watkins sacrificed Adreon to third, freshman Katie Keim hit a grounder to the shortstop. Adreon hustled towards home, but was thrown out on the play.
Iowa plated the go-ahead run with an RBI single by senior Colleen McGlaughlin in the top of the 11th. Senior Sam Heinzman started the rally with a single and moved to second by an Erin Riemersma sacrifice. With two outs in the inning, McGlaughlin delivered a single through the left side and the speedy Heinzman scored.
Senior Brittany Weil threw all 11 innings, which is a career-high for innings pitched in a game. She allowed one earned run on only three hits with 13 strikeouts. Weil is just one strikeout away from 900 career K’s, and needs only 48 more to break the Iowa all-time strikeout record.
The Hawkeyes return to Iowa City Sunday for their home opener against South Dakota Sunday. Game one of Sunday’s doubleheader will begin at 1 p.m. Pearl Field will host its first regular season games since the Flood of 2008 destroyed nearly the entire stadium.
