IOWA CITY, IA – – The University of Iowa men’s tennis team defeated 40th-ranked Michigan Sunday, 4-3. With the victory the 67th-ranked Hawkeyes move to 10-2 overall and 2-0 in Big Ten play on the season. In addition, Iowa has defeated four nationally ranked opponents this season.
“This was a great win for us,” said Head Coach Steve Houghton. “It is clearly one of our biggest wins in the last few years. Once again I was really proud of how our guys competed.”
Iowa claimed the doubles point, winning two of three matches. Tommy McGeorge and Will Vasos continued their dominant play at the No. 3 position. The duo, undefeated in dual match play at 12-0, defeated Mike Sroczynski and Drew Daniel 8-4. Christian Bierich and Nikita Zotov, ranked 55th nationally, defeated the 26th-ranked duo of Jason Jung and George Navas, 8-5, to clinch the doubles point.
Reinoud Haal claimed the first singles victory for Iowa. The junior defeated Jung 7-5, 6-0, at the No. 2 position. Iowa won the last two singles matches to claim its second-straight Big Ten victory. Bierich defeated Andrew Mazlin 6-4, 5-7, 7-5, at the No. 1 position. McGeorge then defeated Navas 7-6, 3-6, 7-6, to clinch the victory for the Hawkeyes.
Iowa travels to sixth-ranked Ohio State Friday. The Hawkeyes will face the defending Big Ten champions at 3 p.m. (CST).
