UNIVERSITY PARK, PA – – The University of Iowa men’s tennis team lost at 53rd-ranked Penn State Sunday, 4-2. With the loss, the 52nd-ranked Hawkeyes fall to 10-4 overall and 2-2 in Big Ten play on the season.
The Nittany Lions, now 9-8 overall and 2-2 in Big Ten play, won two of three doubles matches to claim the point. Tommy McGeorge and Will Vasos defeated Eddie Bourchier and Ryan Gormley, 8-7 (7), at the No. 3 position. The duo bounced back after losing for the first time in dual match play Friday. McGeorge and Vasos are now 13-1 on the season.
The Hawkeyes claimed three singles victories on the afternoon. Senior Christian Bierich defeated Brendan Lynch 3-6, 6-3, 6-2, at the No. 1 position. Reinoud Haal was victorious at the No. 3 position. The junior defeated Jason Lee 3-6, 6-3, 7-5. McGeorge continued his strong play at the No. 5 spot. The junior, now 11-3 overall and 3-1 in Big Ten play, defeated Guillaume St-Maurice 0-6, 6-4, 6-2.
Iowa returns to Iowa City to host ninth-ranked Illinois Friday at the Hawkeye Tennis and Recreation Complex. The match is scheduled to begin at noon. Admission is free.
