EVANSTON, IL – The University of Iowa softball team dropped game two of Wednesday’s doubleheader at Northwestern, 16-5 in five innings. Iowa falls to 33-11 overall and 5-5 in Big Ten play, while Northwestern improves to 25-8 and 11-1 in conference action.
Iowa scored in its first at-bat, using an RBI triple by senior Colleen McGlaughlin to score the contest’s first run. Junior Taylor Leichsenring reached on a one-out error and scored from first on the triple.
Northwestern responded in the bottom of the first, scoring six runs on four hits to take a 6-1 lead after one full inning.
The Wildcats kept rolling in the third inning, scoring six more runs to take a 12-1 lead.
The Hawkeyes wouldn’t go away quietly, scoring two runs in the top of the fourth for a 12-3 count. Junior Katie Brown drew a leadoff walk and moved to second on a solid single by senior Erin Riemersma. After senior Callie Adreon entered at second as a pinch-runner, both runners moved up a base on a wild pitch. Freshman Katie Keim plated Adreon with a sacrifice fly to center, and Riemersma scored next off another wild pitch.
Northwestern tacked on four more runs in the bottom of the fourth with a grand slam from Adrienne Monka for a 16-3 lead.
Iowa added two runs to its total in the top of the fifth when junior Katie Brown smacked a two-run home run, but the Hawkeyes couldn’t plate enough runs to extend the game.
Iowa will remain in Big Ten play this weekend, hosting Michigan State in single games Saturday and Sunday. Both games are scheduled for 2 p.m.
