MINNEAPOLIS, MN — The Iowa baseball team dropped game one to Minnesota at Siebert Field tonight, 4-3. The Gophers had a big seventh inning to take their first lead of the game and win. Iowa had the tying and winning runs aboard in the top of the ninth, however were unable to get the timely hit.
“Tonight was an outstanding college game,” Head Coach Jack Dahm said. “Unfortunately we came out on the wrong end of it. Minnesota got some timely hits and we didn’t, however, our guys played extremely well and we showed more energy then we have in weeks.”
Leading the Hawkeye offense was Dallas Burke going 3-for-4 with a walk. Kurtis Muller went 2-for-3 with two walks and a run scored. Trevor Willis led the team with two RBI and went 1-for-4.
Iowa (14-28, 3-12) broke the board in the top of the first with a 1-0 lead. Muller drew a leadoff walk and moved to second on an error. Ryan Durant singled to right field to move Muller to third. Muller scored on a Freie fielder’s choice.
Minnesota (28-13, 11-4) tied it up in the third, 1-1, on a Derek McCallum solo shot.
With two out, Iowa took the lead back, 3-1 in the fourth. Jeff Pacha doubled to center and scored on a Willis two-run homer to center.
The Gophers scored one in the sixth and two in the seventh to win 4-3. Minnesota manufactured two runs on only one hit in the seventh, taking advantage of free bases and a Kyle Knudson two RBI single.
Phil Schreiber got the start throwing five and one-third innings and allowing two runs on seven hits in the no decision. Reliever Steve Turnbull got the loss, allowing two runs on one hit. Mike Schurz recorded the final out of the eighth.
Iowa is scheduled to play Minnesota tomorrow in game two at Siebert Field. First pitch is set at 2 p.m.
