COLUMBUS, OH – The Iowa baseball team fell to Ohio State in game one of a three-game series Thursday night at Bill Davis Stadium, 13-4. The Buckeyes jumped out to an early lead in the first and never trailed today’s contest. Kurtis Muller hit a two-out grand slam in the ninth; however it was too late to play catch up for the Hawkeyes.

Iowa’s offense was led by Ryan Durant. Durant went 2-for-4 with a stolen base and extended his hit streak to nine games. Mike McQuillan went 1-for-3 with a stolen base and continued his hit streak to 11 games. Phil Keppler was 2-for-4. Muller extended his hit streak to 10 games with his ninth inning grand slam.

Ohio State (37-15, 16-6) got on the board in the first, taking a 1-0 lead. The Buckeye offense put up a nine spot in the second to push the game out of reach. Ohio State also added three in the third. Sophomore Buckeye Alex Wimmers was dominate on the mound and received his ninth win of the season in six innings of work with 12 strikeouts.

Iowa’s (16-33, 4-17) offense struck in the top of the ninth, however, it was too little too late falling to Ohio State 13-4. Sean Flanagan singled with one out, followed by a Phil Keppler single. With two outs, Zach McCool walked to load the bases. Muller took advantage and hit a grand slam to center, the first of his career to put Iowa on the board.

Starter Nick Brown got the loss, going one inning and allowing six runs on five hits. The Hawkeye bullpen featured Patrick Schatz and Zach Kenyon.

Iowa is slated to take on the Buckeyes again tomorrow in game two of the series. First pitch is set for 5:35 p.m. (CDT)
