McGlaughlin Named First Team Academic all-American

May 27, 2009

IOWA CITY – University of Iowa senior Colleen McGlaughlin was one of 11 Division I softball student-athletes nationally to be chosen as first team ESPN the Magazine Academic all-American. McGlaughlin, who was selected as the designated player, becomes the first Hawkeye softball player in school history to be named first team Academic all-American twice in a career. She earned the same honor last year as a junior.

McGlaughlin, who was the only Big Ten player to land on an Academic all-American team, is an actuarial science major and carries a perfect 4.0 grade point average. She led the team with a .348 batting average, 10 home runs, 14 doubles and 49 RBI.

The Morton, IL, native was also named first team National Fastpitch Coaches Assocation (NFCA) Midwest Region and first team all-Big Ten. McGlaughlin was honored as an ESPN the Magazine first team Academic all-District pick earlier this season.

McGlaughlin is also just the third softball player in Iowa history to earn multiple Academic all-American honors in a career. Amy Johnson was a third team pick in 1990 and a second team selection in 1991, while Tasha Reents garnered second team honors in 1995 and first team accolades in 1996.

McGlaughlin’s recent honor marks the fifth time Iowa has had a softball student-athlete named first team Academic all-American (Marty Pump – 1982, Tasha Reents – 1996, Kristin Johnson – 2003, Colleen McGlaughlin – 2008 and 2009).
