The University of Iowa women’s soccer team improved its record to 3-2-0 with a win Sunday over Northern Arizona. The Hawkeyes defeated the Lumberjacks, 4-1, in their final game at the Mountain Classic, hosted by NAU.
“We’re very excited about this win. Our energy was really high in this game, and that’s always a nice thing to see,” Head Coach Ron Rainey said. “We responded well to their goal to tie the game, and also to the lightning delay by scoring goals after both of those. That is a great thing to be able to play hard and not let those things bother us.”
Keli McLaughlin got the offense started for the Hawkeyes with a header in the fourth minute that was high of the crossbar. McLaughlin and Alex Seydel fired away at the Lumberjack goalkeeper in the seventh minute, but both were blocked. In the 20th minute, Morgan Showalter led Sarah Langlas with a pass just left of the six-yard box. Langlas chipped it in over the goalkeeper for her first goal of the season.
Northern Arizona attempted to find the net in the 36th minute, but Iowa goalkeeper Emily Moran made the save. A corner kick led to a header goal by Kristi Andreassen in the 40th minute.
The score didn’t stay tied for long. Kim White responded with a header goal of her own off of a corner kick by Jackie Kaeding. The goal, scored in the 45th minute, is White’s first career goal at Iowa.
Iowa started the second half with a goal at the 47:01 mark by McLaughlin. Alyssa Cosnek hit the right post, but McLaughlin got the rebound and the score.
In the 54th minute, the game was delayed for 30 minutes due to lightning.
The teams returned to the field after the delay with intensity. A string of shots by both teams kept the goalkeepers on their toes.
In the 89th minute, McLaughlin netted one from eight yards out after a chip pass from Cosnek.
McLaughlin led the Hawkeyes with five shots and two goals. Cosnek had two assists in the win. Moran made two saves in goal.
Head Coach Ron Rainey and the Hawkeyes return to Iowa City to host Loyola-Chicago at 7 p.m. on Friday (Sept. 11). The match kicks off a four-game home stand for Iowa.
