The University of Iowa women’s tennis team began play at the ITA Midwest Regional tournament Friday. The tournament site is split between the University of Illinois and Northwestern University’s campuses. Hawkeye doubles and singles were both successful on the court today. The team ended day one of the competition with 5-1 record overall in doubles competition and a 5-0 record in singles play.
“We had a great first day on both sides. I think everyone was excited coming off of the last tournament and used that confidence to play very well today,” Mira Radu said. “We’re very happy with today’s results, but we can’t get ahead of ourselves. There are still a lot of matches left so we need to stay focused and continue to do the right things to win.”
Lynne Poggensee-Wei and Sonja Molnar competed against Breuss/Westerink of Eastern Michigan, and won with an 8-5 decision. Merel Beelen and Zuzi Chmelarova defeated Gruber/Saltarelli of Wisconsin, 8-1. Kelcie Klockenga and Jessica Young downed Forsyth/Vescovi of IPFW, 8-4 and Minor/Stromberg of Illinois, 9-7. Ally Majercik and Alexis Dorr recorded a win over Friedlund/McLaughlin of Northern Illinois, 8-3, but fell to Chupa/Markovic of Wisconsin, 8-2.
“We started a little slower in doubles today, but the girls did what they needed to do to win. We definitely looked better in the second round of play, so we were happy to see that improvement,” Chris Lueth said. “We were focused in our singles matches and got the wins against good competition.”
The Hawkeyes were undefeated in singles play. Beelen defeated Rogers of Northern Illinois, 6-0, 6-0. Young downed Forayth of IPFW, 6-1, 6-3. Chmelarova recorded a win over Donohue of Bradley, 6-0, 6-0. Majercik won her match against Friedlund of Northern Illinois, 6-1, 6-0, and Klockenga defeated Egan of Eastern Illinois, 6-2, 6-1.
Action will resume tomorrow morning at 8 a.m.
