TULSA, OK – – The University of Iowa men’s tennis team completed competition Sunday at the Wilson/ITA Central Regional Championships. The tournament marked the first time Iowa has ever competed in the Central Regional.
Three Hawkeyes (Marc Bruche, Reinoud Haal, Nikita Zotov) competed in the singles back draw Sunday. Bruche defeated Ken Nordheim of Saint Louis in the quarterfinals, 6-6, (4-2) ret. He then fell to Oklahoma’s Blake Boswell, 6-3, 1-6, 10-4 in the semifinals.
Haal defeated James McKie of rival Drake, 6-3, 6-7 (5), 10-8, to advance to the semifinals. The senior then lost to Jon Orbist of Wichita State, 7-6 (1), 4-6, 10-5. Zotov fell in the quarterfinals to Obrist, 6-1, 5-7, 10-8.
“The highlights of the weekend were Tommy McGeorge and Will Vasos beating the No. 2 seed in the doubles bracket,” said Head Coach Steve Houghton. “Additionally, Reinoud and Marc both advanced to the semifinals of the singles back draw. Overall, we made a lot of progress this weekend.”
The Hawkeyes have concluded play at the ITA Central Regional. The Black and Gold will compete next at the annual Big Ten Singles Tournament. Competition will begin Friday in East Lansing, MI.
