The University of Iowa soccer team scored first in Columbus, but fell short to No. 25 Ohio State, 3-2, Friday night. The Hawkeyes are now 8-5 overall.
“We made a lot of good things happen, and we had a lot of opportunities in the first half so that is a positive,” Head Coach Ron Rainey said. “We scored first, but we need to step up our game on the defensive side for a very tough game on Sunday against Penn State.”
The Hawkeyes took the momentum first with a score in the 20th minute. Alyssa Cosnek scored her fourth goal of the season off a shot from just outside of the 18-yard box that found the net over the goalkeeper.
Ohio State’s Ashley Bowyer found the net twice in the first half, with her first goal of the season coming in the 36th minute. Bowyer found the net off a header from a free kick at the midfield point. In the 40th minute, Kendyl Reed took aim at Iowa’s goal, and Bowyer redirected it from ten yards out for the score.
Morgan Showalter hit the target in the 43rd minute from outside of the 18-yard box. Iowa’s attack was in full force on the opponents half, and the defense could not clear the ball. Showalter took advantage for her fourth goal of the season.
The score was tied at half time, but the Buckeyes wasted no time with the attack in the second half. Lauren Steuer headed it in just over Iowa’s goalkeeper Emily Moran for the final score of the game in the 54th minute.
Moran made four saves in goal, and Cosnek led Iowa’s offense with two shots and one goal.
The Hawkeyes face Penn State Sunday in State College, PA, in a tough game between Big Ten foes. Game time is set for 10 a.m. (CT)
