IOWA CITY, IA- The University of Iowa men’s swimming team wrapped up its third and final day of competition at the Hawkeye Invitational. After three days of competition, Iowa won the meet with 1408 points. Finishing behind Iowa are Truman State (656), South Dakota State (575), and Western Illinois (442).
The Hawkeye men started off the final day of competition with the 1650 free. Freshman Patrick Weigand had a close race with Truman State’s swimmer for most of the long distance but Weigand pulled ahead in the last 50 yards to win the race with a time of 15.57.88. Senior Brian Farris came in fourth at 16.23.64.
Iowa continued the competition with the 200 back, claiming the top three spots. Freshman Byron Butler took first place with a collegiate best time of 1:49.60. Freshman Donny Warren came in second (1:51.12), while junior Bryan Hill came in third (1:54.72).
The Hawkeyes continued to dominate in the 100 free. Iowa placed in the top six spots. Sophomore Paul Gordon earned first place in the event and posted a collegiate best time of 45.35. Sophomore Duncan Partridge came in second (45.44) and junior Brad Jones finished third (46.87). Junior Sean Hagan won the 200 breast with a time of 2:07.36, while senior Matt Ryan placed second (2:08.72).
Iowa wrapped up the meet with the 200 fly and 400 free relay. Sophomore Brian Tremml took first place in the 200 fly with a season best time of 1:51.46. Senior Josh Schubert came in behind Tremml to place second with a time of 1:57.63. The relay team of freshman Jordan Huff, sophomore Ryan Phelan, Partridge and Gordon took the top spot in the 400 free relay, posting a time of 3:00.36. Iowa’s “B” relay came in second with a time of 3:09.22.
