Iowa Finishes Season At Purdue

Nov. 7, 2009

The University of Iowa soccer team saw extra time for the fourth time this season, but fell to Purdue in the final game of the season, 3-2.

“I’m really proud of how our team fought today. We were down 2-0 to a good opponent, and they came back and scored two to take it to overtime,” Head Coach Ron Rainey said. “They really showed a lot of heart and character to force the overtime. I’m disappointed we couldn’t get the win for our seniors, but we saw a lot of great things and we’re excited for next year.”

Purdue was the first to challenge the goal in the second minute, but the aim was off and the ball hit the post.

Alex Seydel fired one into the box in the 10th minute, but Purdue goal keeper Jenny Bradfisch made the stop.

Iowa goal keeper Emily Moran snagged the save in the 33rd minute off a header shot, but a shot by Jessica Warren was out of reach in the 40th minute. The ball found the net for the Boilermaker score.

Just after the half time break, Remi Gibba edged one by Moran at the 46:20 mark for the opponent score.

Nicole Slevin sent one towards the target in the 58th minute, but Bradfisch was there for the stop only to have a Purdue player foul Iowa in the box. Seydel took the penalty kick for Iowa and converted her fifth PK of the season to put the Hawkeyes on the board.

The Hawkeyes capitalized on a Boilermaker offside call in the 86th minute. Slevin placed the cross pass at the perfect spot for sophomore Morgan Showalter to score on the header shot in the 88th minute to tie it up.

Purdue’s attack was fierce in the extra time, tallying five shots in five minutes. Moran was there for two save and the Iowa defenders blocked two, but the Boilermakers would benefit from and Iowa own goal to end the game 3-2.

The Hawkeyes were led offensively by Showalter who had four shots and one goal and Seydel who had two shots and a goal. Moran made eight saves.
