AMES, IA- The University of Iowa women’s swimming and diving team traveled to Ames, IA Friday night to face the Iowa State Cyclones. Iowa had some strong swims but it was not enough to beat the Cyclones. The Hawkeyes lost the meet 166-133.
Senior Verity Hicks had two first-place finishes for the Hawkeyes. She took the top spot in the 200 free, which was Iowa’s first win of the night. Hicks recorded a season best time of 1:51.42. Finishing right behind Hicks was senior Christine Kuczek, placing second with a time of 1:53.02. Hicks went on to win the 500 free later on in the meet. She posted a time of 4:58.85.
Junior Katarina Tour also had two first-place finishes for Iowa. She swam a season best time of 1:04.35 in the 100 breast. Swimming the last individual race of the night, Tour took the top spot in the 200 IM (2:03.72). Tour finished second in the 100 fly (55.67). Kuczek took first-place in the 100 free. She earned a season best time of 51.16.
The Hawkeyes finished first and second in the 200 butterfly. Senior Laura Mozdzen placed first in the event with a time of 2:04.09. Senior Katie Michelau came in right behind Mozdzen for second-place. Michelau posted a time of 2:04.96.
The relay team of Kuczek, Hicks, and sophomores Danielle Carty and Daniela Cubelic concluded the meet with the 400 free relay. The team came up short, finishing second behind Iowa State, posting a time of 3:26.62.
Iowa divers competed at the meet. Sophomore Veronica Rydze took 3rd place in the 1-meter diving with a score of 256.72. Senior Brittany Logan came in fifth (183.00), while freshman Mary Sue LeMay came in sixth (179.99). Later on in the competition the divers competed in the 3-meter diving event. Rydze took second-place with a score of 270.68. Lemay came in fifth (178.43) and Logan came in sixth (163.80).
