Iowa Completes Day One of Shamrock Invite

SOUTH BEND, IN- The University of Iowa women’s swimming and diving team finished its first day at the Shamrock Invite. The Hawkeyes faced host Notre Dame, Denver and 21st-ranked Missouri. After the first day of competition Iowa is ahead of Denver 83-27 in the dual scores. They trail behind Notre Dame 71-39 and Missouri 63-47.

The competition started off with the 200 free relay. The team of senior Christine Kuczek, senior Julie deBruin, sophomore Daniela Cubelic and junior Katarina Tour started off with a second-place finish in the relay event. Iowa posted a time of 1:34.92. Iowa’s “B” team placed fifth in the event with a time of 1:35.82.

Senior Verity Hicks placed eighth in the 500 free. She earned a season best time of 4:59.56. Sophomore Dana Davidsen swam the 500 free for the first time this season. She placed 11th with a time of 5:03.04. Iowa had four other swimmers in the event placing 12th, 13th, 14th and 21st.

Tour had a first-place finish for the Hawkeyes in the 200 IM. She earned the top spot with a time of 2:05.24. Senior Julie Feingold placed eighth in the event with a time of 2:07.74. Iowa had 11 swimmers in the 50 free. DeBruin had the best finish for the Hawkeyes in the event after placing third (23.65). Cubelic finished fifth (23.93), which Kuczek came in right behind for sixth-place (23.95).

The Hawkeyes ended the first day of competition with the 400 medley relay. The team of sophomore Danielle Carty, Feingold, Tour and Kuczek earned fourth-place for Iowa’s fastest time this season in the event. The team posted a time of 3:48.81.

The lady divers competed in the 1-meter diving event. Junior Veronica Rydze placed third in the event with a score of 267.75. Freshman Mary Sue LeMay placed 11th (201.50), while senior Brittany Logan came in right behind in 12th place (187.70.

The competition continues tomorrow with the first session starting at 10 a.m. and the second session starting at 5 p.m.
