Box Score

BOCA RATON, FL – The University of Iowa softball team split a pair of games at the FAU “Parents Weekend” Tournament Saturday on the campus of Florida Atlantic. The Hawkeyes fell to Western Kentucky, 2-1, before edging Virginia Tech, 6-5. Junior Chelsey Carmody paced the Iowa offense, hitting 3-for-6 on the day with three RBI and her team-leading sixth homerun.

Iowa (9-10) never trailed in its Game 2 win over Virginia Tech. The Hawkeyes jumped to an early lead with a three-run first inning against the Hokies. Senior Lindsey Digmann reached on an error to start the contest and Carmody belted a homerun one batter later to give Iowa a 2-0 advantage. Liz Watkins then singled and scored on Jenny Schuelke’s single to centerfield to give Iowa a three-run lead.

In the Hawkeyes’ half of the third frame, Watkins plated Katie Brown with her Big Ten-leading third triple and extended Iowa’s lead to 5-1 when she scored on a Stephanie Ochoa RBI single.

Freshman Ashley Akers made her first career start and scored the eventual game-winning run on Carmody’s RBI groundout in the fourth inning.

Freshman Chelsey Lyon (4-5) earned the win by allowing just three hits and one run in four innings of work. Senior Amanda Zust pitched the final three innings to preserve the 6-5 victory.

The Hawkeyes were held to just two hits in their 2-1 loss to Western Kentucky. Carmody and Watkins each hit 1-for-3 at the plate. Freshman Sam Valentine swiped home on a double steal to score Iowa’s lone run. Zust (5-4) suffered the loss despite allowing only two runs in six innings.

The Hawkeyes return to action tomorrow with a 4 p.m. contest vs. Syracuse at the FAU Tournament.
