AUSTIN, TX — The University of Iowa baseball team lost at No. 3 Texas Saturday afternoon in the seven inning first game of a doubleheader at UFCU Disch-Falk Field.

Mike McQuillan led the Hawkeye for the second-straight game, offensively, going 1-for-2 with a run scored, two stolen bases and a hit by pitch. Dan Sheppard, Ryan Durant and Dallas Burke all recorded singles

Iowa manufactured a run in the first to lead, 1-0. With one out, McQuillan hit a single up the middle then stole both second and third. He later scored on a Longhorn throwing error.

Texas’ Kevin Lusson hit a two-out round tripper to right field to tie it up, 1-1, in the bottom of the second. The Longhorns took the lead in the fourth, 2-1, and added another in the fifth to win, 3-1. Texas starter Cole Green allowed no earned runs, striking out nine in a complete game.

Starter Phil Schreiber recorded the loss going five and one-third innings allowing three earned runs on five hits and striking out three. Patrick Schatz came out of the bullpen to record the final two outs.

The Hawkeyes (4-7) will face Texas (11-3) in the nightcap of the doubleheader today. The game will start at about 3:15.
