Box Score

BOCA RATON, FL – The University of Iowa softball team lost to Syracuse, 3-2, in eight innings Sunday evening at the FAU “Parents Weekend” Tournament. The Hawkeyes had taken a 2-1 lead to the bottom of the eighth inning, but Syracuse scratched a couple runs across in the bottom of the frame to escape with the one-run victory.

Freshman Chelsea Lyon (4-6) struck out five and allowed just three hits while tossing her second career complete game. After allowing one run on two hits in the first inning, the Oklahoma native held Syracuse without a base hit until Lisaira Daniels tripled home the game-tying run in the final frame. Daniels eventually scored the game-winning run on an infield chopper.

Junior Jenny Schuelke (1-for-2) recorded Iowa’s lone hit in the contest. The Hawkeyes (9-11) managed to plate the tying run in the second inning when Liz Watkins coaxed a leadoff walk and pinch-runner Ashley Akers crossed the plate on a Syracuse wild pitch. Freshman Jordan Goschie later gave the Hawkeyes’ a 2-1 eighth-inning lead when she scored following a Taylor Leichsenring bunt attempt. Leichsenring reached on the bunt and while trying to advance to second base, Goschie raced home as Leichsenring got caught in a run-down.

Syracuse senior Brittany Gardner earned the win for the Orange. Gardner fanned 10 and allowed just one hit in the complete game effort.

The Hawkeyes return to action Tuesday with a pair of games against Syracuse and Florida Atlantic. Iowa will square off against the Orange at 2 p.m. before facing tournament host FAU at 6 p.m.
