SAN ANTONIO, TX — The University of Iowa baseball team fell to Texas-San Antonio (UTSA), 4-2, Wednesday night at Wolff Stadium.
Four Hawkeyes recorded hits in the loss. Ryan Durant led Iowa’s offense, batting 2-for-4 with a single, run scored and RBI double. Kurtis Muller went 1-for-3 with a double and a walk. Dan Sheppard collected an RBI-single. Andrew Host picked up a pinch-hit single.
UTSA (8-7) broke the board to lead, 1-0, in the fourth. The Roadrunners plated one on a Ryan Dalton sacrifice fly.
Iowa (4-10) gained the lead in the sixth, plating two to pull ahead, 2-1. Muller led off with a walk, advanced to second on a wild pitch and later scored on a Durant RBI double. Durant scored on a two-out single off the bat of Sheppard.
The Roadrunners reclaimed the advantage, 4-2, with a three-spot in the bottom of the sixth. The inning featured a Jeff Taliaferro two-out two RBI double off Hawkeye reliever Patrick Schatz. Iowa was unable to generate any offense off UTSA’s bullpen the final three frames.
Sophomore Nick Brown earned his first start of the season and got the loss. Brown went five and two-third innings, allowing four runs on a career-low three hits and striking out a career-high six Roadrunners. The bullpen featured Schatz and Michael Jacobs.
The Hawkeyes will return to action Friday night in the first game of three against Texas-Pan American. First pitch is set for 6 p.m.
