BOCA RATON, FL – The University of Iowa softball team worked overtime to split a pair of extra inning games on the final day of the FAU “Parents Weekend” tournament. Iowa topped tournament host Florida Atlantic 2-1 in nine innings in Game 1 before falling 4-3 in eight innings in Game 2.

Katie Keim (3-for-4) recorded a career-high three hits and pinch-hitter Heidi Daumen drove home the game-winning run in Iowa’s Game 1 victory. Senior Amanda Zust allowed one run and scattered eight hits to earn the win. Zust struck out six and walked just two in the complete game effort, her 11th complete game of the season.

Keim gave the Hawkeyes a 1-0 lead with a run-scoring single in the sixth inning before eventually scoring the game-winning run on Daumen’s RBI single in the ninth. Zust retired the side in the bottom of the ninth to secure the 2-1 victory.

Iowa dropped Game 2 of the doubleheader 4-3 in eight innings. Freshman Chelsea Lyon allowed no earned runs and struck out three in five-plus innings before being relieved by Zust in the sixth. Zust struck out two and allowed one earned run to suffer the loss.

Katie Brown singled home Chelsey Carmody to give Iowa a 1-0 lead in the fourth inning, but FAU plated a pair of runs in the sixth frame to take a 2-1 advantage into the seventh inning. The Hawkeye rallied for two runs in the seventh inning to retake the lead, but the Owls scored one run in both the seventh and eighth innings to escape with the one-run win.

The Hawkeyes (12-12) return to Pearl Field Tuesday, March 20, to host South Dakota in the 2010 home opener. The doubleheader is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.
