URBANA, IL – – The University of Iowa men’s tennis team lost at No. 13 Illinois Sunday, 7-0. The 60th-ranked Hawkeyes fall to 10-7 overall and 2-4 in conference play with the loss at the Khan Outdoor Tennis Complex.
“The final team score was deceiving in that we had four, three-set matches,” said Head Coach Steve Houghton. “I thought we actually played pretty well against the No. 13 team in the nation.”
The Hawkeyes, 6-6 away from Iowa City, were unable to claim the doubles point as Illinois swept all three matches.
Four singles matches took three sets to decide a winner, but Iowa was unable to claim any victories against the Fighting Illini. Abe Souza, ranked 85th nationally, downed Reinoud Haal 5-7, 6-4, 1-0 (10-4), at the No. 3 position. Will Vasos fell to Johnny Hamui at the No. 4 spot. The sophomore lost 3-6, 6-3, 6-2. Tommy McGeorge battled Connor Roth at the No. 5 position. The senior lost 6-7 (6-8), 6-4, 6-3. Tom Mroziewicz competed at the No. 6 spot. The freshman fell to Bruno Abdelnour 6-3, 0-6, 6-2.
The Black and Gold return to action next weekend in Iowa City. Iowa will face No. 33 Wisconsin Friday at noon. The Hawkeyes will then face No. 48 Northwestern Sunday at noon. Both matches will be held at the Hawkeye Tennis and Recreation Complex. Admission is free.
