STATE COLLEGE, PA – The University of Iowa softball team was defeated at Penn State Sunday, 5-2. The Hawkeyes fall to 23-16 overall and 8-3 in Big Ten play.

Penn State grabbed a 4-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning. The Nittany Lions put runners on first and second for Lauren Rossi, who hit a three-run home run to straight-away center field. Cassidy Bell added an RBI single for the fourth run of the inning.

Iowa cut Penn State’s lead in half in the top of the third with two runs. Singles by sophomore Katie Keim and senior Taylor Leichsenring along with a walk by senior Lindsey Digmann loaded the bases with no outs. Keim scored the first Hawkeye run off a passed ball and a sacrifice fly by sophomore Liz Watkins put the second run of the frame on the scoreboard.

Morgan Long gave Penn State an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth with a sacrifice fly to right field, making the score 5-2.

Keim led the Hawkeyes at the plate with two of Iowa’s five hits.

Senior Amanda Zust falls to 14-7, tossing 5.1 innings. Zust allowed five runs on seven hits with three strikeouts. Freshman Chelsea Lyon tossed two-thirds of an inning and gave up three hits.

Iowa will host intra-state rival Northern Iowa Wednesday at 6 p.m.
