Former Hawkeyes Enjoy International Success

Aug. 2, 2010

IOWA CITY, IA – The University of Iowa was represented in the 2010 Central American Caribbean Championships last week. Three former Hawkeyes, Peaches Roach, Tammilee Kerr and Rachael Marchand, competed at the CAC Championships held in Mayaguez, Mexico last week.

Roach, a four-time All-American, claimed the gold medal in the heptathlon while competing for Jamaica. Roach recorded top finishes in the high jump, 100 meters, 200 meters and 800 meters. Also competing for Jamaica was Kerr. The former Hawkeye threw 50.55 in the javelin for a top finish in the event en route to her bronze medal in the heptathlon.

Marchand, a two-time All-American, represented Puerto Rico in the CAC Games. Marchand ran the 5k and 10k, reaching the podium in each event. Recording a time of 16:13.59 in the 5k, the former Hawkeye earned the silver medal. Marchand also finished in the top three of the 10k, taking the bronze medal with a time of 34:55.79.

“One of our goals as a program is to have our athletes compete at the conclusion of their Hawkeye career, and these three ladies, Peaches, Racheal, and Tammilee, had an opportunity to represent Puerto Rico and Jamaica in International competition,” Head Coach Layne Anderson said. “To medal in this meet is a testament to their continued level of commitment, and all three continue the All-American level of performance that exemplified their Iowa careers. Look for more in the future from these three and others as they train toward 2012.”
