Host Iowa Wins Hawkeye Invitational

Sept. 19, 2010

IOWA CITY, Iowa – – The University of Iowa women’s golf team took full advantage of playing at home at the Hawkeye Invitational Saturday and Sunday at Finkbine Golf Course. The Hawkeyes won the tournament with a 54-hole total of 926, shooting rounds of 301, 313, and 312. Ball State finished second (932) and North Dakota State came in third (939). The tournament title is the first since 2006. The Black and Gold overcame multiple weather delays over the two day tournament to win.

“They did a really good job with the weather delays,” noted Head Coach Kelly Crawford. “They don’t let the weather get to them, they don’t let the delays get to them, they find things to do to stay occupied and we’re very fortunate our team does well with delays.”

Sophomore Kristi Cardwell led the Hawkeyes. She finished third individually, shooting a 227 (+11). Her lowest round came in round one when she posted a 74. Junior Chelsea Harris was the second Hawkeye in the top five. Her 230 (+14) was good for a fourth place finish.

Senior Laura Cilek placed seventh after recording a 234 (+18). Fellow Senior Lauren Forbes carded 77’s (+5) in the first and third rounds to tie for eighth. The Hawkeyes third senior, Brianna Coopman, finished tied for 22nd, firing a third round 79 (+7) while competing as an individual. Freshman Karly Grouwinkel, competing as an individual, finished tied for 30th in her first collegiate tournament after carding a 246 (+30). Freshman Woojay Choi tied for 35th after shooting a 248 (+32). Choi’s first competition at the collegiate level also came as an individual. Sophomore Gigi DiGrazia rounded out Iowa’s scoring with a 259 (+43).

“I’m really excited about the win,” said Crawford. “We haven’t won in four years and we’re so happy to get the trophy back in our case. I’m really happy about how the team played; everyone put up some really great rounds.”

Iowa will tee it up next in Madison, WI when it plays at the Badger Invitational September 27-28.
