IOWA CITY, Iowa – Members of the 2010 NCAA Champion University of Iowa wrestling team will be heading to Washington, D.C. next week to participate in the NCAA Student-Athlete Reception on the South Lawn of the White House. United States President Barack Obama will recognize teams and student-athletes that won NCAA Championships during the 2009-10 academic year, Monday at 3 p.m. (CT). Hawkeyesports.com will be the exclusive source for photos and videos during the event.
The Hawkeye travel party includes 2010 NCAA Champions Jay Borschel (174) and Matt McDonough (125), All-Americans Montell Marion (141), Ryan Morningstar (165) and Dan Erekson (Hwt.) and 2010 NCAA qualifiers Jake Kerr (157) and Chad Beatty (197). Former Hawkeye Dan LeClere (141), Iowa seniors Aaron Janssen (157) and Luke Lofthouse (197), junior Blake Rasing (Hwt.) and sophomore Nate Moore (133) will also be making the trip.
The Hawkeye coaching staff of Tom Brands, Terry Brands and Mike Zadick, as well as 2010 NCAA Champion Brent Metcalf (149) will not be part of the event, as they will be returning from the 2010 World Championships in Moscow, Russia.
The travel party is set to leave Iowa City at 5 a.m. Monday, and will head directly from the airport to the White House reception after landing in Washington, D.C. After the reception, the group will tour several national monuments and some historic sites before heading back to Iowa City Tuesday evening.
Iowa is one of six Big Ten teams to earn an invitation to the event. The Penn State women’s volleyball, and men’s and women’s fencing teams, the Purdue women’s golf team and the Michigan men’s gymnastics teams have also been invited.
