EVANSTON, Ill. —The University of Iowa men’s tennis team opened their third tournament of the season, competing at the Wildcat Fall Invitational. The Hawkeyes are joined by DePaul, Marquette, Purdue, Western Michigan and Wisconsin.
The Hawkeyes faired well on the singles side, picking up three victories in the opening round. Junior Marc Bruche continued to be a bright spot for Iowa, defeating J. Manuel Munoz of Marquette 6-2, 6-4 in the opening round in Flight A. Jonas Dierckx knocked off Thibault Troude 6-0, 6-2 in the first round in Flight B. Also in Flight B, Mitch Beckert earned his first win of the fall season with a 6-3, 4-6, 1-0 (11-9) victory over Jonathan Schwerin. Beckert picked up a win for Iowa in the Wildcat Fall Invitational last year, as well.
On the doubles side, Beckert also advanced through the first stage. Beckert, teaming up with Purdue’s Matt Manassee, defeated Wisconsin’s tandem of Alex Robles/Alexander Teppert by an 8-3 count. Iowa’s doubles team of Bruche/Dierckx received a bye at the bottom of the bracket, and then advanced to the semifinals with an 8-5 victory over Ben Hartman/George Chanturia (DePaul) in round two.
Bruche will face Otavio Perim of Marquette in round two of singles play Saturday, while Nikita Zotov will face Chris Jackman (NU) on the consolation side in Flight A as well. In Flight B, Dierckx will face George Chanturia (DePaul) while Beckert will do battle against Bartosz Jozwiak (DePaul) on the championship side. Jeroen Gortworst will face Matt Manassee on the consolation side of Flight B.
The Iowa doubles tandem of Bruche/Dierckx will face DePaul’s Perim/Troude in the semifinals, while Zotov/Gortworst and Beckert will play on the consolation side in doubles action. Action will start up again in Evanston at 8:00 a.m.
