NORMAN, Oklahoma —The University of Iowa men’s tennis team started the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Men’s Central Region Championships today at the University of Oklahoma, with five competitors in qualifying action. Iowa will also have four players in action in the Main Draw on Friday starting at 8:00 a.m.
Freshman Chase Tomlins responded with a victory in his first match as a Hawkeye, defeating Brandon Videtich of Nebraska 8-3. Tomlins fought hard his next match, falling just short against Bradley’s Hamish Weerasinghe 6-3, 2-6, 10-8.
After earning his first win of the season last week at the Northwestern Invitational, Mitch Beckert earned an opening round victory in Group C of qualifying action with an 8-3 win over Arthur Romanet. Becker also lost a three-set match in the next round, falling to Nebraska’s Eric Sock 6-1, 4-6, 10-8.
Garrett Dunn also earned his first victory of the season, picking up a victory over Alex Buceta of Western Illinois 6-2, 6-2 in consolation play. Dunn received a bye in the first round in Group H, but was knocked off by Tom Blackwell of Nebraska in round two.
Marc Bruche, Austen Kauss, Will Vasos, and Jonas Dierckx will be in action in the Main Draw for the Hawkeyes tomorrow.
