EAST LANSING, Michigan —The University of Iowa men’s tennis team came away with a strong performance in the consolation rounds after the first day of singles play at the Big Ten Indoor Championships. The Hawkeyes went 5-2 overall on the consolation side, and also had two opening round victories.
Will Vasos and Chase Tomlins led the Black and Gold in Day Two at East Lansing, as each picked up opening round victories. Tomlins came away with a 6-3, 6-0 victory over Penn State’s Henry Seaborn. Vasos knocking off Michigan State’s Clark Richardson with a 7-6 (1), 6-2 advantage. Both Tomlins and Vasos came up short in round two, and will take to the consolation side tomorrow.
After a tough first round, Iowa won five of their seven matches in consolations on the day. Joey White got things started off with a hard fought 7-6 (3), 6-3 victory over Indiana’s Ian Tesmond, and Mitch Beckert followed suit with a 7-6 (4), 6-3 win over the Nittany Lions’ C.J. Griffin. Nikita Zotov fought past Michigan’s Duncan Muil 6-3, 7-5 as well. Austen Kauss walked away with a 6-4, 6-2 victory over the Spartans’ Ryan Richman. After losing the first set, Garrett Dunn responded with a 5-7, 6-1, 10-2 win over Northwestern’s Tobias Reitz in consolation action as well.
Singles action will resume in East Lansing tomorrow with the third day of the Big Ten Indoor Championships with action getting underway at 9:30 p.m.
