EAST LANSING, Michigan — The University of Iowa men’s tennis team concluded their fall season today at the Big Ten Indoor Championships, as freshman Chase Tomlins led Iowa with two singles victories on the day and an appearance in the consolation quarterfinals.
“I thought we had a strong showing in our final event of the fall season,” said head coach Steve Houghton. “We had good performances in both singles and doubles, and that is very encouraging as we begin off-season training for the Spring season.”
After earning an opening round victory in the main draw but falling in round two on Saturday, Tomlins made the most out of his consolation appearance with two consecutive wins in three sets. Tomlins knocked off Penn State’s Russell Bader 2-6, 6-3, 10-5 to get underway. In round three, Tomlins took the first set against Michigan State’s Drew Lied 6-4, but dropped the second one 1-6. Tomlins then earned a hard fought 10-8 win in the third set to advance. Wisconsin’s Peter Satral defeated Tomlins in the consolation quarterfinals.
Will Vasos and Nikita Zotov also paced the Hawkeyes on the day, with each coming away with a singles victory in the back draw. Vasos defeated Illinois’ Connor Roth 6-3, 6-2, and Zotov beat the Spartan’s Christian Roehmer 7-5, 6-4 in the second round of consolation action. Both were knocked off in round three, with each playing sets in tie-breakers.
Iowa had two doubles teams fare well in Flight A with two victories on Friday. Vasos and Austen Kauss dropped their first match, but won two consecutive matches in the consolations. Zotov and Garrett Dunn had a similar story, responding with two victories after an opening round loss. Doubles action came to an end on Friday, while finals matches will be played Monday to conclude the tournament.
The Hawkeyes will now go into off-season training until the Spring season begins with the ITA Kick-Off Classic on January 28th.
