EVANSTON, Ill. – The University of Iowa women’s tennis team opened play at the Wildcat Invitational Friday. The Hawkeyes posted a 4-2 overall record in singles play. Senior Jessica Young won her match over Olga Chernova of Michigan State by fighting off a match point. Iowa had one doubles team, senior Lynne Poggensee-Wei and freshman Christina Harazin, advance to the championship round. Iowa was 3-3 overall in doubles.
“Lynne and Christina did a great job of quickly adjusting to each other and working off each others’ strengths,” said Head Coach Katie Dougherty. “Jessica played a very tough third set and got herself out of trouble by playing smart and being aggressive at the right times.”
In doubles play, juniors Ally Majercik and Cassandra Escobar fell in both of their matches, losing to Wisconsin’s Chupa/Hois 8-1 and Bohrer/Wilson of Michigan State 8-6. Senior Lynne Poggensee-Wei and freshman Christina Harazin advanced to the finals of the Flight C bracket by defeating Michigan State’s Chernova/Silesova 8-4 and Markovic/Gruber of Wisconsin 8-6. Seniors Jessica Young and Alexis Dorr lost in the first round 8-4 to Radu/Eckel of Oklahoma but bounced back to beat University of Illinois-Chicago’s Kovaleva/Simonetti.
In singles play, Escobar posted a 6-1, 6-3 victory over Hayley Everett of LSU. Majercik fell to Kathryn Sharples of Illinois-Chicago 6-3, 6-0. Dorr defeated Minnesota’s Peta Forsyth 7-5, 6-2. Young fought off a match point to record a 6-3, 3-6, 7-6 (4) win against Olga Chernova of Michigan State. Harazin lost to Wisconsin’s Lauren Gruber 6-2, 6-4. Poggensee-Wei beat Allice Radu of Oklahoma 6-3, 6-3.
