MINNEAPOLIS — The University of Iowa men’s swimming and diving team traveled to Minnesota Friday night. The Minnesota depth proved to be too great for Iowa. The Gophers defeated the Hawkeyes 177-119.
Iowa kicked off the meet with a strong 200 medley relay. Seniors Max Dittmer, Sean Hagan, and juniors Paul Gordon and Ryan Phelan teamed up for the event. The team took second place with a time of 1:31.17, which was less than a second behind Minnesota’s 1:30.52 finish.
Gordon and sophomore Jordan Huff finished first and second in the 100 free. Gordon touched the wall first with a season best time of 1:38.18. Huff placed second with a season best time of 1:39.98. Dittmer and sophomore Dustin Rhoads continued the momentum into the 100 back finishing first and second with times of 50.16 and 50.37, respectively. Rhoads time of 50.37 marked a collegiate best for him.
Dittmer had his second individual first-place finish of the night in the 200 IM. He posted a time of 1:51.75. Hagan had a close race in the 200 breast but touched the wall second with a time of 2:05.09.
The Hawkeyes dominated the 200 back, taking the top three spots. Sophomore Byron Butler claimed the victory with a time of 1:48.45. Dittmer came in second at 1:51.30 and sophomore Donny Warren finished third (1:51.89). Gordon, Huff, Phelan and sophomore Duncan Partridge concluded the meet with the 400 free relay. The team came in second with a time of 3:00.86.
Iowa freshmen divers Arsen Sarkisian and Molina Osvel dove strong at Friday’s meet. Sarkisian took second place in the three-meter event with a score of 281.85 and finished fourth in the one-meter (275.63). Osvel recorded a third place finish in both the one-meter (293.40) and three-meter (249.60).
The Hawkeyes return to action Dec. 3 when they host the Hawkeye Invitational.
