Iowa Concludes Day One Of Hawkeye Invitational

IOWA CITY, Iowa- The University of Iowa women’s swimming and diving team concluded the first day of the second annual Hawkeye Invitational. The Hawkeyes welcomed eight teams to this year’s invitational at the Campus Recreation and Wellness Center. After the first day of competition Iowa is in second-place overall with a score of 227. Denver leads the invitational with a score of 244.

Iowa kicked off the meet with the 200 free relay. The team of juniors Danielle Carty and Daniela Cubelic, freshman Elise Borja and senior Katarina Tour posted a second-place finish with a time of 1:33.35. Iowa’s “B” relay finished in seventh (1:36.62).

Sophomore Lauren Eytalis recorded a collegiate best of 4:57.65 in the 500 free, touching the wall in third-place. Junior Christine Mauro and freshman Emily Christiansen also swam collegiate best times along with top-eight finishes in the event. Mauro finished in seventh (5:02.64) and Christiansen finished in eighth (5:05.04).

Freshman Haley Gordon had the Hawkeyes first, first-place finish of the night in the 200 IM. She posted a collegiate best time of 2:03.05. Tour finished in second with a season best time of 2:03.21. Freshman Emily Hovren finished in the top eight with collegiate best time in the event (2:07.37).

The last individual event of the night was the 50 free. Carty earned a collegiate best time in the event (23.62) along with a third-place finish. Cubelic finished in sixth in the event with a time of 23.82.

The Hawkeyes concluded the first day of competition with the 400 medley relay. Cubelic, Tour, Gordon and Carty finished in second-place with a time of 3:44.17. Iowa’s “B” relay finished in fifth (3:51.34).

Senior Deidre Freeman won the 1-meter diving event. She earned herself collegiate best score of 320.20. Junior Veronica Rydze also scored a collegiate best score of 281.30, finishing in third. Freshman Lauren Kelba came in tenth with a score of 235.95.
