IOWA CITY, Iowa- The University of Iowa men’s swimming and diving team concluded the first day of the second annual Hawkeye Invitational. The Hawkeyes welcomed six teams to this year’s invitational at the Campus Recreation and Wellness Center. After the first day of competition Iowa leads the competition with 307 points.
Junior Ryan Phelan, sophomore Duncan Partridge, freshman Devon Meeks and senior Sean Hagan teamed up to kick of the meet in the 200 free relay. The team led the entire race and touched the wall first with a NCAA “B” qualifying time of 1:20.93. Iowa’s “B” relay came in fifth (1:22.73).
Freshman David Belzer posted a collegiate best time of 4:25.64 in the 500 free, touching the wall in second-place. Junior Paul Gordon finished in third place with a time of 4:26.23. Sophomores Andy Ahlberg and Patrick Weigand finished fifth and seventh in the event with times of 4:32.69 and 4:35.41, respectively.
Freshman Tyler Lentz added another first-place finish for the Hawkeyes in the 200 IM. He swam a collegiate best time of 1:49.62. Senior Max Dittmer rounded out the top-three finishers with a time of 1:50.85. Hagan came in fifth (1:50.99) while freshman Byron Butler finished in seventh (1:53.07).
Iowa had five swimmers place in the top eight of the 50 free. Partridge and Phelan finished first and second in the event. Partridge touched the wall first with season best time of 20.33. Phelan placed second with a time of 20.36. Senior Richard Salhus finished fourth (20.87), Meeks finished sixth (21.00) and sophomore Jordan Huff placed seventh (21.08).
The Hawkeyes concluded the meet with the 400 medley relay. Dittmer, Hagan, Gordon and Partridge posted a first-place finish in the event with a NCAA “B” qualifying time of 3:17.36. Iowa’s “B” relay came in third with a time of 3:19.65.
Iowa divers Arsen Sarkisian and Osvel Molina both placed in the top-ten in the 3-meter diving event. Sarkisian took seventh-place with a score of 274.85 and Molina finished in ninth with a score of 271.00.
