IOWA CITY, Iowa– The University of Iowa men’s swimming and diving team concluded the second day of the Hawkeye Invitational. The team set six pool records and leads the competition with 805 points. Notre Dame is in second-place with 605 points.
“I can’t hang a lot on to the meet and pool records but it is fun all the same to see those names up there,” said Head Coach Marc Long. “What we wanted tonight was to have people moving up in their positions and every heat we had an Iowa Hawkeye in, we wanted to win that heat. We did a really nice job with that, especially in the finals. We have to prepare now for a whole new set of events tomorrow morning.”
The Hawkeyes started off the second day of competition with a splash, taking first and second place in the 200 medley relay. Freshman Dustin Rhoads, senior Sean Hagan, and juniors Paul Gordon and Ryan Phelan put together a fantastic relay. The team took first-place in the event with a time of 1:29.78, which set a new pool record and meet record. The time also was a NCAA “B” qualifying cut.
Gordon earned two individual first-place finishes after being a member of the first-place 200 medley relay team. His first individual win of the night was in the 100 fly, posting a collegiate best time 48.19. He collected another new pool and meet record in the 200 free with a time of 1:36.68. In both events, Gordon’s times were NCAA “B” qualifying times.
Following in Gordon’s path, Hagan recorded a new pool and meet record in the 100 breast with a time of 55.24. Freshman Byron Butler posted a collegiate best time of 48.38 in the 100 fly along with a second-place finish in the event. Closing out the last individual race of the night, Rhoads posted a collegiate best time in the 100 back of 48.89. His time also set a new pool and meet record.
The fans were on the feet as the men concluded the second day of competition with the 800 free relay.Freshmen Gianni Sesto and Manuel Belzer, sophomore Duncan Partridge and Gordon won the event with a time of 6:36.63. The team crushed last year’s meet record by nearly 20 seconds and now hold the pool record.
Hawkeye divers competed in the 1-meter diving event. Freshman Arsen Sarkisian finished eighth in the event with a score of 273.60.
