TAMPA, Fla–The University of Iowa women’s swimming team competed at the Tampa Relays Saturday afternoon at the UT Swimming Complex in Tampa, Fla. The Hawkeyes racked up 194 points and finished first out of four teams. Host University of Tampa placed second (102), South Dakota State and The University of the Incarnate Word tied for third (72).
The Hawkeyes raced in 10 relay events, capturing first-place in nine of the events. Iowa swept first and second-place honors in the 400 medley relay. The team of junior Daniela Cubelic, freshman Karolina Wartalowicz, senior Katarina Tour, and freshman Elise Borja touched the wall first with a time of 4:00.49. Sarah Galvin, sophomore April Allen, and freshmen Lauren Drennan and Abbey Tuchscherer placed second (4:08.38).
“We’re happy to come away with solid wins in a unique and competitive relay format meet,” said Head Coach Marc Long. “Thanks to the University of Tampa for running a great meet. Our trip continues with more intense training throughout the week.”
Iowa finished the day with the 400 free relay. The Hawkeye quartet of Cubelic, freshmen Emily Hovren and Emily Christiansen and sophomore Caitie Polz finished three seconds ahead of Tampa to take first place, 3:24.01-3:45.71. Tour had a team high of five wins during the meet and Cubelic recorded four relay victories.
The Hawkeyes return to action Jan. 15 when they travel to Illinois to take on the Illini. The event will start at 11 a.m. (CT).
