IOWA CITY, IowaThe University of Iowa women’s swimming and diving team finished the first session of the Shamrock Invitational. The event is scored as a dual meet between all participating teams. The Hawkeyes are competing against host Notre Dame, Northwestern, Ohio State, and Denver.
“We’re off to a good start, but there’s a lot of racing left,” said Head Coach Marc Long. “We have two intense sessions of competition tomorrow.”
The relay team of junior Daniela Cubelic, senior Katarina Tour, freshman Elise Borja and senior Caitie Polz kicked of the first session of the Shamrock Invite for the Hawkeyes with the 200 free relay. The quartet posted a fourth-place finishing time of 1:35.50.
Senior veteran Katarina Tour posted Iowa’s highest individual finish of the night. Tour recorded a fourth-place finish in the 200 IM with a time of 2:05.31. Freshman Haley Gordon placed sixth in the event (2:06.45).
Following the 200 IM, Borja earned a 10th place finish in the 50 free with a time of 24.29. Polz and Cubelic tied for 14th place in the event (24.44).
Freshman Emily Christiansen grabbed an 11th place finish in the 500 free with a time of 5:02.46 while sophomore teammate Lauren Eytalis came in 17th (5:05.31).
Freshman diver Lauren Kelba was Iowa’s only diver at the competition. Kelba competed in the 3-meter diving event, earning a fifth-place finish. She scored a collegiate best score of 278.60.
The Hawkeyes concluded the first day of the invitational with the 400 medley relay. The quartet of Cubelic, Tour, and freshmen Aiste Dobrovolskaite and Emily Hovren took seventh-place with a time of 3:51.27.
The Shamrock Invitational will conclude tomorrow with session 2 beginning at 10 a.m. (ET) followed by session 3.
