DeLand, Fla. — Junior Katie Keim’s walk-off RBI single lifted the University of Iowa softball team to a 3-2 victory over Stetson in the team’s night cap of a doubleheader at the Stetson Classic.
The Hawkeyes built an early lead, pushing two runs across the plate in the third inning. Keim had a one out single through the left side to start things off. Following a Michelle Zoeller ground out, senior Chelsey Carmody belted a two-run home run over the centerfield fence to make the score 2-0.
The Hatters evened the tally at two, scoring a pair of runs in the top of the fifth inning. Jordan Cleghorn led off the inning with a solo home run to left field to put Stetson on the board. Brittany Knipp followed with a walk and moved to second on a groundout. Knipp then scored on Chelsey Trotto’s RBI single up the middle.
Sophomore Ashley Akers got things started for the Hawkeyes in the bottom of the seventh, delivering a one-out single to right field. After stealing second to move into scoring position, Keim delivered the big hit, sending an RBI single down the right field line to plate Akers for the walk-off victory.
Chelsea Lyon pitched 1.1 hitless innings in relief to pick up her fourth victory of the season. Freshman Kayla Massey allowed two runs on seven hits in 5.2 innings. She struck out five to go along with six walks.
Keim and Carmody each recorded multi-hit games to lead the Hawkeyes. Carmody extended her hitting streak to 19 games to start the season.
