DeLand, Fla. — The University of Iowa softball team won its fifth straight game, downing Colgate, 4-0, in the opening game of the Stetson Hatter Roundup.

The Hawkeyes got on the board first, plating three runs in the fourth inning to jump ahead 3-0. Senior Chelsey Carmody opened the inning with a bunt single to third base before coming around to score on a Liz Watkins double into the left centerfield gap. Jenny Schuelke singled in the second run with a base hit to right field, and Johnnie Dowling, who reached on an error, stole home to tally the final run.

Iowa added to its lead with a run in the sixth inning. Stephanie Ochoa walked to open the frame before eventually crossing the plate on Ashley Akers’ infield single to third base.

Freshman Kayla Massey pitched a complete game shutout to notch her seventh victory of the season. Massey retired the first 12 batters she faced in the game before allowing a single to Tera Vaughn in the fifth. For the game, the California native scattered three hits and struck out four.

Carmody paced Iowa at the plate, going 2-for-3 with a run scored. It was the senior’s fifth straight multi-hit game, and it pushed her hitting streak to 23 games this season.
