Box Score

Knoxville, Tenn. — The University of Iowa softball team ran into a buzz saw in Tennessee pitcher Ellen Renfroe in a 2-0 loss against the 11th-ranked Lady Volunteers Friday night at Lee Softball Stadium.

The Tennessee freshman carried a perfect game into the seventh inning before the Hawkeyes tallied a pair of hits to bring the winning run to the plate. Junior Katie Keim led off the inning with a single to left field to tally Iowa’s first hit. Senior Stephanie Ochoa then collected a two out single to left field, but Renfroe struck out Liz Watkins to kill the Hawkeye rally and end the game.

Renfroe retired the first 18 batters in order, and she struck out 15 batters in the game.

Tennessee’s offense provided Renfroe all the offense she would need with runs in the first and second innings. Kat Dotson connected on a solo home run in the first before Jessica Spigner hit the team’s second solo shot in the second.

Chelsea Lyon was strong for Iowa in the defeat. The sophomore scattered five hits over six innings, while striking out four.

Chelsey Carmody’s nation-leading 25-game hitting streak was snapped in the contest. The senior finished the game 0-for-3.

The Hawkeyes (14-12) return to Iowa City for their home-opener Sunday at Pearl Field. Iowa hosts South Dakota in a doubleheader beginning at 12 p.m.
