UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – The University of Iowa women’s tennis team defeated Penn State (5-10 overall, 0-3 Big Ten) 5-2 Sunday at the Sarni Tennis Center. The win was the Hawkeyes first of the season against a Big Ten Conference opponent and improved their record to 4-9 overall.
Iowa, 3-6 in road matches, claimed the doubles point by sweeping all three matches. The Hawkeyes have swept the doubles matches in all four of their victories this season.
At the No. 1 position, junior Sonja Molnar and senior Jessica Young won their third consecutive match by beating Petra Januskova and Amy Simidian, 8-4. Molnar and Young, currently ranked No. 40 by the ITA, are 8-3 in dual matches.
At the No. 2 spot, senior Alexis Dorr and freshman Christina Harazin teamed for the first time this season to earn an 8-6 victory over Carmen Sandor and Fernanda Perrotta.
The No. 3 spot also featured a duo playing together for the first time this season, as junior Ally Majercik and senior Lynne Poggensee-Wei teamed to beat Denisa Zobeideh and Maria Prishlyak, 8-3.
In singles, the Hawkeyes won four of six matches for the first time since their win against Miami (OH) on Feb. 14. At the top spot, Sonja Molnar topped Petra Januskova 7-6 (3), 7-6 (5) to earn her team-best ninth victory during dual matches. Jessica Young won her third match in a row at the No. 3 position by beating Carmen Sandor 6-3, 6-7 (5), 6-3. She is 6-7 in dual matches. At the No. 4 spot, Alexis Dorr improved to 4-9 during dual matches with a 3-6, 7-5, 6-3 victory over Denisa Zobeideh. At the No. 6 position, junior Cassandra Escobar secured her first dual match win of the season after beating Carmen Sandor 6-2, 7-5.
Iowa will host a pair of Big Ten Conference opponents next weekend at the Hawkeye Tennis and Recreation Complex. The Hawkeyes will face Indiana Saturday at 11 a.m. (CST) before playing at noon (CST) Sunday against Purdue.
