STARKVILLE, Miss. — The Iowa baseball team won at Mississippi State Saturday night at Dudy Noble Field, 7-6. The game was originally scheduled for a 4 p.m. start, but due to inclement weather, the game did not start until 9:15 p.m.

Senior Trevor Willis had another outstanding game, going 4-for-5 with two runs and a stolen base. He also recorded four hits in Iowa’s 5-3 win over Mississippi State yesterday. Mike McQuillan and Andrew Ewing also recorded multi-hit games, each collecting two hits.

The Hawkeyes (3-5) plated three runs in the top of the first to claim an early 3-0 advantage. Willis singled to right to lead off the game. Zach McCool followed with a single to center and McQuillan then singled to load the bases. Willis scored on a wild pitch, moving McCool to third and McQuillan to second. Tyson Blaser then reached on an error, scoring both runners.

Iowa, which has now won two straight, added another run in the top of the third. Blaser was hit by a pitch to start the inning. He later scored on an RBI groundout by Bryan Niedbalski.

The Hawkeyes added to their lead in the fourth. Willis led off the frame with his third hit, a single to center. With two outs and Willis on third base, Blaser drew a walk. The senior duo then executed the perfect double steal. Willis stole home to push the Iowa lead to 5-0.

Iowa extended its lead to 6-0 in the fifth. With one out, Andrew Host walked. He later scored on an RBI single to right by Kurt Lee.

Blaser led off the sixth with a double to right center. Ewing drove him home with a single up the middle, making the score 7-0.

Mississippi State (9-3) was limited by Hawkeye starter Nick Brown. The junior picked up his first win in his second start of the year, going seven innings. He gave up three earned runs on six hits and three walks. The righty struck out five Bulldogs.

Junior Patrick Lala pitched a scoreless eighth inning before being replaced by closer Kevin Lee in the ninth. Mississippi State tallied three runs in the final frame, but the Hawkeyes held on for the 7-6 triumph.

Iowa returns to action Sunday when it plays Georgia State in Starkville, Miss. First pitch is scheduled for 11 a.m.
