IOWA CITY, Iowa — The Iowa baseball team lost to Indiana Saturday afternoon at Duane Banks Field, 2-1, in game one of a three-game series.

“It was an outstanding pitchers dual,” said head coach Jack Dahm. “Both pitchers did a great job. We needed to put more pressure on (Blake) Monar. It was a great college baseball game, but we have to score more runs and compete better in the batter’s box. We will bounce back tomorrow.”

Both starting pitchers, Jarred Hippen of Iowa and Blake Monar of Indiana, went the distance. It marks the first complete game of the year for each.

Two Hawkeyes, senior Trevor Willis and junior Mike McQuillan, recorded multi-hits today. Willis went 2-for-4 with an RBI, while McQuillan went 2-for-4.

Iowa (12-19, 2-5) got on the board first with a run in the bottom of the third. With two away in the frame and Kurt Lee on first base, Willis doubled to right center to score Lee. The clutch two-out hit from Willis and aggressive base running by Lee gave the Hawkeyes the early 1-0 advantage.

Indiana (22-11, 5-2) evened the score at one with a sacrifice fly in the fifth. The Hoosiers took the lead in the following inning. In the top of the sixth, Indiana took advantage of three singles to push home the game-winning run.

The Hawkeye offense was unable to push across a run in the final innings, giving Indiana the series opening victory.

Hippen took the hard-luck loss for Iowa in his best outing of the season. The junior gave up two runs on eight hits. He struck out a season-high seven Hoosiers.

Monar recorded the win for Indiana. The junior allowed only one run, while scattering six Hawkeye hits.

Iowa continues its series with Indiana Sunday. The two squads will play a doubleheader at Duane Banks Field. First pitch of game one is scheduled for 12:05 p.m. Game two will follow a half hour after the conclusion of game one. Admission is $3 for adults, and free for UI students and youths.
