IOWA CITY, Iowa – – The University of Iowa women’s tennis team was unable to hand No. 10 Michigan (19-3 overall, 9-0 Big Ten) its first Big Ten loss Sunday during Senior Day at the Hawkeye Tennis and Recreation Complex. The Wolverines beat the Hawkeyes 7-0, dropping Iowa to 6-13 overall and 3-5 in conference play.

Michigan, 5-2 in road matches, swept through the doubles point. In a match that featured two nationally ranked duos, junior Sonja Molnar and senior Jessica Young, ranked 24th by the ITA, fell to No. 9 Brooke Bolender and Denise Muresan 8-2 at the No. 1 position. Molnar and Young are 11-6 in dual matches and 5-3 in conference play.

In singles, Molnar, the No. 116 player in the country, pushed No. 8 Muresan to a third-set before falling in the tiebreaker, 3-6, 6-3, 1-0 (10-3). Molnar owns a 13-6 dual match record that includes a 5-3 mark in Big Ten matches. Freshman Christina Harazin also took her opponent to a third set before falling in the tiebreaker. Harazin, 8-8 during dual match play, fell 5-7, 7-6, 1-0 (10-7) against Rika Tatsuno at the No. 5 spot.

Young, Alexis Dorr and Lynne Poggensee-Wei, all seniors, played the final home match of their careers. The Hawkeyes recorded a 3-4 home record while playing at the HTRC this season.

The Hawkeyes will play their last two matches before the Big Ten Championships next weekend. Iowa will play at Wisconsin Saturday, April 23 before traveling to Minneapolis to face Minnesota on Sunday, April 24. Both matches will begin at noon (CST).
