MINNEAPOLIS — The Iowa baseball team lost its series opener at Minnesota Friday evening, 1-0, despite Hawkeye starter Jarred Hippen throwing a one-hit gem. It marks the first one-hitter thrown by a Hawkeye since Troy Wulf one-hit Southwest Missouri State in a 3-0 victory on March 14, 1998. Game one of the three-game set was played at Target Field, the home of the Minnesota Twins.

Hippen took the hard-luck loss, despite allowing only one Minnesota base runner. The junior allowed one run on one hit while striking out two Gophers.

Iowa’s offense recorded eight hits against the conference rival. Two Hawkeyes collected multi-hit games. Senior Tyson Blaser went 2-for-3 with a walk, notching his tenth multiple hit game this season. Junior Chett Zeise went 2-for-4, extending his hitting streak to six games.

Minnesota (15-16, 7-6) scored its lone run in the bottom of the fourth. Troy Larson tallied the Gophers’ only hit with a triple down the right field line. Justin Gominsky then hit a sacrifice fly to right to push across the only run of the contest.

Iowa (15-24, 4-9) left nine runners on base, including leaving the bases loaded in the first inning. In the sixth , Zeise was thrown out at home plate while trying to score on a double by Mike McQuillan.

Minnesota’s T.J Oakes recorded the win. The sophomore scattered eight hits over seven innings of work.

Minnesota and Iowa continue their series Saturday. First pitch is scheduled for 1:05 p.m. at Target Field.
