SAN DIEGO — The University of Iowa women’s rowing team had a successful weekend of racing at the San Diego Crew Classic on the waters of Mission Bay. The Hawkeyes raced two varsity 8 boats, a varsity 4 boat, advancing two boats to the petite final and one boat to the grand final.
“We had a good weekend of racing,” said Head Coach Mandi Kowal. “I was really pleased with the changes the crews made from the first heats to the final heats. We rowed aggressively and did a god job of putting full races together.”
The Hawkeyes began the competition on Saturday with the 1V8 boat. The crew faced four ranked opponents California (3), USC (9), UCLA (11), and Washington State (13). Iowa also took on the University of San Diego. The Hawkeyes placed sixth in the event with a time of 6:38.68, which was fast enough to advance the boat to the petite final on Sunday.
Following the 1V8 boat, Iowa’s 1V4 crew posted a third-place finish with a time of 7:38.73 to advance to Sunday’s grand final. Iowa came in behind 11th ranked UCLA (7:21.8) and fourth ranked Stanford (7:24.27).
The Hawkeyes finished out the day Saturday with the second varsity 8 boat. Iowa finished in third place at 6:52.99 behind Stanford (6:42.30) and Washington State (6:48.80) to advance to Sunday’s petite final.
Opening the day Sunday, the Hawkeyes recorded a second-place finish in the 2V8 petite final with a time of 6:58.13.
Iowa’s next race came in the petite final of the 1V8. The crew claimed a third-place finish, crossing the finish line at 6:46.77. Iowa finished behind Oklahoma (6:45.60) and UCLA (6:45.96).
The Hawkeyes finished up competition at the Crew Classic with the grand final of the varsity 4’s. The crew once again faced ranked USC, UCLA and Stanford, along with Oklahoma and Oregon State. Iowa posted earned a sixth-place finish with a time of 7:59.06.
Iowa will return to action Sat. April 9 when it travels to Columbus, Ohio to duel Ohio State and Indiana.
